Paying for Claude or ChatGPT? Your Plan Now Covers More Than Chat

Monthly API credits, Claude inside Google Docs and Sheets, and what to switch on before the billing cycle ends

The credit expires every billing cycle. Unclaimed, it is money you already paid for and never used.

In the first week of October 2026, Anthropic added two things to the Claude plans many small businesses already pay for. From 7 October, Claude Max and Team plans include monthly API credits, and from 6 October, Claude works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a public beta on every paid plan. A week earlier OpenAI announced that a ChatGPT plan can pay for AI requests inside some other apps.

None of it is switched on by default. If your practice pays for Claude Team, there is a monthly automation budget sitting unclaimed, and it expires at the end of every billing cycle.

What arrived, and who gets it?

What Who gets it Status
Monthly Claude API credits Max 5x, Max 20x and Team plans Live from 7 October 2026
Claude for Google Workspace All paid Claude plans Public beta from 6 October 2026
Sign in with ChatGPT People signing in to supporting apps Announced 29 September 2026, preview limits apply

The first one is the one that changes what a small business can afford to build.

What do the Claude API credits pay for?

The API is the part of Claude that other software calls: an automation that drafts replies, sorts documents or summarises a call, without anyone opening the chat window. Until now that was billed separately from the subscription. Now part of it comes with the plan.

Claude Team · Monthly API credits, from 7 October 2026

How Claude Team seats turn into a monthly API creditEach Standard seat adds 20 US dollars a month and each Premium seat adds 100 US dollars a month. The seats are pooled into one team balance, capped at 500 US dollars. The balance pays for the Claude API, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. It does not pay for Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps. Whatever is unused expires at the end of the billing cycle, with no rollover. Max plans get 100 or 200 US dollars a month on their own, not pooled. STANDARD SEAT US$20 each PREMIUM SEAT US$100 each TEAM POOL capped at US$500 COVERED API, agents, SDK NOT COVERED Claude Code, apps UNUSED no rollover Max plans: US$100 or US$200 a month each, not pooled.

Team plans. US$20 a month for each Standard seat and US$100 for each Premium seat, pooled into one balance and capped at US$500. Anthropic's own example: three Standard seats and two Premium seats receive US$260 a month.

Max plans. US$100 a month on Max 5x, US$200 on Max 20x.

What it covers. The Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK and the playground. Not Claude Code, not extra usage in the Claude apps, and not Claude bought through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry.

When it expires. At the end of each billing cycle. Nothing rolls over.

Claim it to one place on purpose: each plan links to one Claude Console organisation, and you cannot change the link yourself afterwards. Create the organisation you will actually build in, then link it.

When the balance runs out and the organisation holds no purchased credits, API requests stop until next month's credits arrive. Anthropic says the usage is never charged to your Claude plan, so with auto-reload off the downside of trying is a paused automation, not a surprise bill. (Auto-reload tops up purchased credits even while included credits remain, and an organisation invoiced through Anthropic's sales team is billed as usual beyond the credits.) Every API key in the linked organisation draws from the same balance, so give each project its own workspace with a spend limit if more than one thing will run on it.

Is there anything to switch on in Google Docs and Sheets?

If your practice runs on Google Workspace, yes. The Claude add-on opens in a sidebar next to the document, spreadsheet or deck you have open. It can read the file and your selection, write formulas, build pivot tables and charts in Sheets, and propose rewrites in Docs.

By default every change appears as an approval card with a summary, and nothing is edited until someone approves it. There is also a mode that applies changes without stopping. For anything a client will see, keep the approval cards.

An administrator can push the add-on to the whole domain or to selected groups from the Google Admin console. Separately, Google connectors let Claude create and edit Google files from a chat; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner has to enable those first. When Claude works through the connectors, its access matches your existing Google sharing permissions, so a file shared too widely today is open to Claude too.

Check where the data goes. Anthropic's announcement says nothing about where the add-on processes data. Its API documentation lists only two processing options, global or US, and storage in the US. Until Anthropic says otherwise, treat a client file opened with Claude as leaving Australia, and decide that with your privacy obligations in mind rather than after the fact.

Can a ChatGPT plan pay for AI in other apps?

In some apps, with limits. At its developer day on 29 September, OpenAI announced Sign in with ChatGPT, which lets people "bring their AI allowance with them" into third-party apps. It named 16 launch partners, including Notion and Vercel. OpenAI's developer pages describe it as using "their ChatGPT plan for eligible AI requests" and list preview limitations.

So the practical step is small: if a tool you already pay for offers a "Sign in with ChatGPT" option, check whether it lets you drop that tool's separate AI add-on.

Is it worth claiming?

For most Team plans the answer is yes, because claiming costs nothing and the credit disappears either way. Whether it is worth building on is a separate question, and the same one as any automation: how often the task runs, what each run costs, and how long a person spends checking the result. US$100 a month will not run a large automation. How far it goes on a pilot depends on the model and the volume, and a pilot is where most small-business automations should start anyway.

The trap is building something useful on a free balance and discovering its real monthly cost only when the business depends on it. Measure the cost per run while it is still covered.

What to do this week

  1. Check your plan. Max 5x, Max 20x or Team? If Pro, there are no API credits.
  2. Claim the credits in claude.ai billing settings (on Team, a Primary Owner or Owner does this), linked to a Console organisation you will keep.
  3. Set a spend limit on the workspace before the first automation runs.
  4. Pick one pilot task with a clear count of runs per month, and record the cost per run from the Console's cost page.
  5. On Google Workspace, have your Google admin deploy the add-on to a test group first, and keep the approval cards on.
  6. Write down where the data goes for any client information you plan to put through either tool.

Key takeaways

  • A budget you already pay forClaude Team includes US$20 a month per Standard seat and US$100 per Premium seat in API credits, pooled and capped at US$500.
  • Use it or lose itCredits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Nothing rolls over, so an unclaimed month is gone.
  • Check where data goesAnthropic's API docs list global or US processing, and it has not said where the add-on processes data. Treat client files you open with Claude as leaving Australia.

Frequently asked

Do the API credits come with Claude Pro?

No. Anthropic lists Max 5x, Max 20x and Team (including discounted Team plans) as eligible. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not.

Can we use the credits for Claude Code?

No. Anthropic says the credits cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK and the playground. Claude Code and extra usage in the Claude apps are excluded.

What happens when the credits run out?

If the linked Console organisation holds no purchased credits, API requests stop until next month's credits arrive. Anthropic says usage is never charged to your Claude plan. To keep going you buy credits or turn on auto-reload.

Is Claude for Google Workspace finished?

No. Anthropic announced it on 6 October 2026 as a public beta on all paid Claude plans. Administrators can deploy the add-on from the Google Admin console, and on Team and Enterprise plans an owner has to enable the Google connectors before Claude can edit Google files from a chat.

Can our ChatGPT plan now pay for AI inside other apps?

In some apps. OpenAI's Sign in with ChatGPT lets people use their plan for eligible AI requests in apps that support it, starting with 16 launch partners such as Notion and Vercel. OpenAI's developer pages list preview limitations and do not name every plan or country, so check inside the app you use.
